Equipping Young Minds for the Future of Work: JA Ghana Empower Students in the Western Region

The world of work is changing rapidly. Advances in technology, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship are creating new opportunities while also transforming the skills young people need to succeed.
For students preparing to transition from school into higher education, employment or entrepreneurship, exposure to these emerging opportunities can make a significant difference.
Through its partnerships, Junior Achievement Ghana (JA Ghana) is helping young people build the skills, confidence and mindset needed to navigate this changing landscape.
From 3 to 7 August 2026, JA Ghana travelled to Takoradi in Ghana's Western Region to implement a series of youth-focused initiatives at Fijai Senior High School and Archbishop Porter Girls' Senior High School. The five-day engagement brought together students and facilitators through three key interventions: Pathways to Work, Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and an Ideathon. This initiative was in accordance with the National Business Pitch Competition, NBPC.
Preparing Students for the Future of Work
The Pathways to Work programme provided students with practical exposure to career development, employability, project management and entrepreneurship. Beyond academic preparation, students explored the skills and behaviours required to succeed in today's workplace and gained a better understanding of the different pathways available to them after secondary school.
Through interactive sessions and discussions, students were encouraged to think critically about their strengths, interests and aspirations while developing a clearer understanding of the relationship between education, skills and career opportunities.
For many students, the experience provided an opportunity to see their future beyond the classroom and begin thinking more intentionally about the kind of careers and impact they want to pursue.
Introducing Young People to Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing how businesses operate, how people learn and how work is performed.
Recognising the importance of preparing young people for this transformation, JA Ghana introduced students to the fundamentals and practical applications of AI.
The sessions enabled students to explore how AI can support learning, creativity, problem-solving and future careers while also encouraging responsible and critical use of emerging technologies.
The experience helped students move beyond seeing AI as simply a technological concept and begin considering how they can use technology as a tool to create opportunities and solve problems.
The future of work will require young people who are not only consumers of technology but also capable of using technology to create solutions.
From Ideas to Solutions: The Ideathon
The Ideathon provided students with a platform to put their learning into practice.
Working collaboratively, students identified challenges and developed innovative ideas aimed at addressing real-world problems. The process encouraged creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, communication and entrepreneurial thinking.
Students were challenged to move from identifying a problem to thinking about possible solutions and presenting their ideas as an experience that mirrors the innovation and problem-solving processes increasingly valued in today's workplace.
The Ideathon demonstrated that young people are not only beneficiaries of development; they can also be active contributors to solving the challenges facing their communities.

The Human Impact
Beyond the numbers and activities are the individual experiences of students whose perspectives are being shaped by these opportunities.
For students at Fijai Senior High School and Archbishop Porter Girls' Senior High School, the programme created opportunities to ask questions, explore new possibilities and engage directly with concepts that will increasingly influence their education, careers and lives.
From discovering new career pathways to experimenting with AI and developing innovative solutions, students were encouraged to think differently about what is possible.
A student from Archibishop Potter Girls’, shared:
“I have a dream of being an entrepreneur in the future and to this experience has taught me the ways and steps to follow to become a successful entrepreneur in the future.
Another student, reflected:
“Entrepreneurs don't start with products; they start with problems.”

“I had a very great and educative experience with JA Ghana. I learnt a lot about AI, entrepreneurship and ideation.”
These voices capture an important part of JA Ghana's approach: creating experiences that do not simply teach young people, but inspire them to see themselves as capable individuals with the potential to shape their own futures.
